The IB Diploma (DP), the Abitur, & German Higher Education Admission
Students who intend to study in Germany must follow some very specific guidelines for choosing DP courses that will enable their IB Diploma to be recognized as equivalent to the German Abitur. Please visit the KMK/Anabin website (choose 'International Baccalaureate' as the 'Land') and/or follow the links below for more information. Should you have any questions you can email Mr Layman (A-K) or Mrs Mika (L-Z), the ISD Career & Higher Education Counsellors.

German Language Proficiency
Generally, IB MYP/DP German Language A and B courses are not accepted as evidence of German language proficiency. Students who intend to study in German in Germany should prepare for, and take, one of the official German language proficiency assessments above in order to demonstrate the B2/C1 proficiency level required by most German higher education institutions. This includes native German speakers/German passport holders, who may be required by individual institutions/programmes to provide official evidence of their German langauge proficiency.
Native German speakers and/or students who have achieved the ZP/Mittlere Reife qualification may be exempted from providing an official German language proficiency result. As this is decided by each individual institution/programme, please contact the relevant institution(s) to confirm whether this is the case or not.
In all cases, it is up to the student/parents to be aware of the relevant German language proficiency requirements that apply to them and to meet those requirements as stated by the individual institutions. For that reason, our general guidance is that all students who intend to study in Germany should take one of the officially recognized proficiency assessments unless they have verified directly with the institution(s) to which they will apply that they are exempt from this requirement.
